While based in Seattle, Sarah Butler’s notably whimsical and ladylike style has caught the eyes of style lovers everywhere. Her most recent collaboration with renowned street style photographer (and boyfriend) Jose Martinez has transformed her personal style blog into a curated editorial destination, capturing the attention of some of fashions elite. Read along to learn how Sarah has conquered Seattle’s style scene…and isn’t stopping there.
On your career…
What inspired you to start your blog “Sarah Styles Seattle”?
I have always loved fashion and exploring my own personal style. Fashion for me has always been a way to connect with and relate to others. Whether it is reading a magazine or shopping with friends, fashion seems to be a continuous dialogue to me. Therefore, I naturally gravitated towards the idea of a blog where I could more formally share my point of view. It’s been so rewarding being able to join a larger community through my blog and social media.
Do you find that it helps your success to be somewhere like Seattle instead of over saturated markets like NYC and LA?
Because the community of personal style bloggers is much smaller in Seattle, I would say that I feel less influenced by others than maybe someone living in New York or Los Angeles. I can create and share how I dress in my city without thinking too much about what others are doing. I definitely think individuality is a major factor for success in this industry, so for this reason, I find that living in Seattle has been helpful to differentiate myself.
You and your photographer boyfriend Jose Martinez work collaboratively to cover Fashion Week street style and we love it! Imagery is captured by him and curated by you - is there a process that works best for the two of you when creating these stories?
Jose is so talented and I love working with him in this way. Our process has organically developed over time. From the beginning, I have always loved the street style images he takes during fashion week. Moreover, I am personally inspired by all the outfits (he has such a good eye for style). I was so inspired that I wanted to start incorporating them into my blog content for my followers. However, I wanted to do so in a curated way. I wanted to share what I was seeing when I’d look at say 200 outfits. So I started pulling out specific looks, items, brands, and creating these trend edits. Now I have a whole catalog of blog posts like “best sunglasses of fashion week” or “10 cool ways to wear leopard print”. Each fashion week season I add more and more.
If you weren’t blogging, what would you be doing?
I worked in fashion marketing my whole career before transitioning full-time into blogging. Most recently I worked at Amazon (I even relocated to New York for a year while working there). So, if I wasn’t blogging, I’d probably be doing something very similar but for a brand that’s not my own.
What is one piece of advice you’d give someone trying to make it as an influencer?
It’s really important to define your point of view and stay true to it. Consistency is everything.
On style & fashion week season…
How would you describe your style?
I would say my style could be described as feminine meets vintage.
Where do you find style inspiration?
Almost all of my inspiration comes from scrolling instagram and pinterest. I really like pinterest for saving and cataloguing all the images I love (I’m a really organized person, clearly). I have boards like vacation style, summer style, etc. When I am packing for a trip I always reference back to these boards for inspiration.
What do you love from Joie’s Fall Collection?
I love the effortless femininity of Joie’s fall collection. The soft floral prints are just perfect, the airy skirts are a dream, and I couldn’t be more excited about the Alejandra knit sweater with lace trim.
Fashion week season is upon us! Favorite fashion week memory?
Every season is full of unexpected moments. However, all of my favorite memories are times when I am invited to a show, presentation, or showroom of a designer that I just love. I remember the first time I visited the Joie showroom in Paris. It was a dream to experience the newest collection and meet the faces of the team. These moments are really incredible.
You’ll be traveling a lot for fashion week – what are the 3 staples you pack no matter where you go?
Yes, I have to pack for almost a month! Overtime, I’ve learned the benefits of keeping it simple. Classic pieces are always my go to. Top three would have to be a white dress, silk skirt, and chunky cardigan sweater.
Which fashion week location is your favorite and why?
How could you not pick Paris!? I’m personally really inspired by the effortless Parisian style. The city really is as beautiful as the style though.
Do you find time to enjoy the cities between shows and shoots, or is it all work and no play?
It’s a lot of work. However, I make a conscious effort to enjoy the present. Otherwise, it’s really easy to lose sight of the moment when you’re focused on the next photo, the next post, the next show...
What is your fashion week styling must-have?
A selection of sunglasses are definitely a styling must-have for fashion month.
One thing you can’t make it through fashion week season without?
Definitely my camera.
On Seattle and travel…
Can you share any of Seattle’s best-kept secrets?
It doesn’t rain as much as everyone thinks!
Describe the perfect day in Seattle – what would you see/visit, and where would you eat and drink?
My perfect day in Seattle would start by grabbing a coffee, probably an almond milk latte, from my neighborhood coffee shop on Capitol Hill. The latte would be to-go so that I could enjoy it as I check out what’s new in my favorite boutiques and plant shops in the area (I’d probably grab fresh flowers for the house, at the least) until I made my way to Volunteer Park for a quick break to enjoy the view. Then for the afternoon, depending on the time of year, maybe visit the Frye Art Museum or head to the water to cool down followed by lunch at Cafe Presse or maybe an early happy hour at Bar Vacilando with friends. I would end with dinner at Single Shot and ice cream from Molly Moon’s.
What is your favorite neighborhood in Seattle and why?
I live in the neighborhood called Capitol Hill and I would definitely argue that it's the best. The location is about a 10 minute walk from downtown; making it a bit more relaxed but still full of life. You will find some of the best coffee shops, restaurants, and parks in the area.
Favorite places to shop in Seattle?
Totokaelo is one of my favorite boutiques in Seattle. I think Nordstrom is of course an obligatory answer.
What is your Seattle wardrobe must-have?
Sometimes the weather in Seattle can be unpredictable in the spring and fall so I really love the combination of a chunky sweater with a t-shirt or tank underneath paired with a skirt. That way I am always warm but can remove the sweater if necessary. Despite the practicality, I think the combination is effortlessly chic.
What are some of your favorite cities to travel to?
The cities I love to travel to are the ones that I always find myself returning to over and over. I really enjoy Palm Springs for a quick warm-weather getaway in the spring, Whistler for skiing in the Winter (and usually New Year’s Eve), and somewhere on the beach in Croatia for the summer.
Where have you not yet been that you are dying to go?
I’d love to go to Morocco!
