Rachelle Hruska MacPherson
As the end of summer nears, an escape to the coast is exactly what we need. Meet Rachelle Hruska MacPherson, founder of Guest of a Guest and Lingua Franca, as we chat motherhood, life in Montauk, and weekend dressing
We'll find you in NYC or in Montauk?
Dressed for brunch or for the beach?
Your idea of a perfect weekend afternoon?
I love weekend days that are unplanned. They usually end up leading to the most fun, and leave us open to do whatever we feel like depending on our moods or we’re always wonderfully surprised by who we happen to run into on the beach.
Favorite Sunday indulgence?
Tequila or wine at sundown.
A Rachelle-approved dinner menu for a get-together with friends?
Best way to refresh for the week ahead?
Spend the weekend unplanned and with those you love.
On life as an entrepreneur…
You have started two very successful businesses, event and travel guide website Guest of a Guest and Lingua Franca’s embroidered sweaters, both of which have built parts of who you are. Which one speaks closest to who you are today?
I think both businesses pull from different parts of me. Creating Lingua Franca has given me a creative outlet - a sort of tangibility - that I felt was missing in my professional life. I really enjoy creating things from scratch that you can actually touch.
What inspired you to start Guest of a Guest?
It was so long ago! 11 years ago, there really wasn’t an online resource for people like me (young professionals living in NYC that wanted to go out at night). I loved blogging and it sort of just happened.
Both you and your husband have businesses that are booming. How do you find time to spend with family?
We prioritize it! I think we also do a good job of incorporating our kids in our lives as much as we can. My sons are in our offices, which is a block from our home, weekly.
Who is your favorite person that you’ve met via Guest of a Guest?
There are too many to choose from!
Tell us about the decision to use Lingua Franca as a way to take a stand against the current political issues we are seeing.
Lingua Franca employs over 40 part-time embroiders - all women of diverse backgrounds. We have immigrants and students sewing for us. We started slowly putting resistance phrases on sweaters for fun. We started sewing away and we haven’t stopped since.
When it comes to family…
How has becoming a mom impacted you as an entrepreneur?
I have learned what to hold on to and what to let go of - and that there are so many things you should just let go of!
If you had to pick one piece of advice to tell your boys as they grow up, what would it be?
To be kind and to have convictions.
How did you and Sean meet? Was it love at first sight?
We met at the Spotted Pig and became best friends first. Our relationship and our love story really started as a friendship and a deep and profound connection, and I feel so fortunate to have him by my side. He is my biggest cheerleader, my greatest fan, my everything.
You and Sean have “beat the system” inscribed inside your wedding bands – what is the back story?
When we got married, we promised we would try to “beat the system” together. In other words, live life on our own terms and not get bogged down in the petty.
Any last minute summer vacation plans?
We are heading to France for 2 weeks!
We're also celebrating the summer season with our pop-up in Southampton. When it comes to the Montauk...
Any favorite or secret local hangouts you are always frequenting?
I’m in Montauk often and rarely venture out beyond Amagansett. I love the Crow’s Nest obviously. Most days I also stop by the food trucks on Ditch plains. I love the trails overlooking the ocean in Shadmore state park and Melet Mercantile always feels like walking through an undiscovered gem.
What do you find most interesting or exciting about living here?
Besides the landscape, which is truly next level beautiful, there are so many different Montauks. I think it’s cool that the local fishermen are living next to city hipster types, who are next to families and other Long Island vacationers. It creates a sort of interesting “melting pot” if you will.
If you had to choose one, New York City or Montauk?
I choose both! Both NYC and Montauk fulfill such deep needs of my soul. I love culture and NYC is so rich in its diversity. I also love being surrounded in nature and on the ocean. There is something truly magical being out on the tip of the island - it feels like you are at the end of the world.
Any upcoming events on your calendar that you're looking forward to as the summer winds down?
We are launching new products for Lingua Franca, building a new home in NYC and my son is starting “real” school (kindergarten) this year and I’m so excited for him!
