Nicole Trunfio

This Mother’s Day, we’ve partnered with Australian supermodel, jewelry designer, and boss mama Nicole Trunfio to be our Joie Sunday Girl! With two babies, a rockstar husband, and a bustling career, Nicole exemplifies motherhood goals. Read along as she tells us her secrets for mastering the perfect work-life balance in style.

On motherhood and family…

What is the most rewarding part of motherhood?

Definitely the hugs and kisses, and the unconditional love you feel for your babies. Their little laughs, their deep mysterious gazes, discovering all about them, their feelings and every thought. Seeing yourself in them, the impact you can make and how you can shape them into bright, brilliant, kind human beings.

What was the transition like going from one baby to two?

Baby number two is quite a walk in the park, because you have already done all the firsts. I LOVE having a second child, it makes my family feel more complete and like more of a unit. My son now has someone to play with, actually more like make trouble with. They love each other so much - watching their bond grow stronger every day makes me melt.

Do you see any major differences in having a boy and a girl?

Complete differences. Immediately from birth you see how different communication in men versus women actually is. It provoked the idea inside of me that learning these difference in schools and respecting what women need verses what men need would make this world a much more harmonious place.

You are writing a book about the truth behind pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum. What inspired you to write about these topics?

I had a near death, epically painful experience with my first and had to have multiple surgeries afterwards. I was told to seek a lawyer to launch a malpractice case, which is out of character for me, and the lawyer requested that I start a diary of the events so we could document everything properly. Within this process I found the healing I needed and decided this was my way to heal, not by getting justice in the court system. I knew sharing my story and knowledge with other women could help them avoid my experiences. My daughter was the complete opposite experience, which has now added to the story. It’s quite a page-turner and a funny read too. I am almost done. It’s been hard managing a business, modeling, being a mother and touring with my husband, but I will get it out to the world soon enough!

What was the most surprising thing you learned when you became a mother?

How exhausting it is. I never thought something could exhaust me to the point that I’d fall into bed at night with all of my clothes on. I’m usually like the energizer bunny, nothing can stop me…except motherhood.

The book also talks about home-birth vs childbirth – so, which one wins?

You will have to read it!

How did you and your husband meet?

We met through a mutual couple that actually married us. They have known both of us for a long time and thought we were meant to be. It took some convincing on both ends, but we fell so madly and deeply in love. I’m glad they didn’t give up on us! He is my King.

How do the two of you stay connected as a couple with two kids, and such bustling careers?

We talk all the time, even when we are away. We are very honest with each other, we both take criticism well, we are loyal and down for the ride. We both have the same vision but our own independence as well. I think you have to give friends, family and loved ones room to grow and evolve, not to expect the same things from them. Let them surprise you with their own personal evolution. It’s been a wild ride, but I wouldn’t change anything.

On your career…

You have two jewelry lines – Trunfio Universe and Erth. What inspired you to break into the jewelry world?

A deep and old love, maybe from a past life. I have had three people tell me I was Cleopatra in a past life - maybe that is where my obsession for gold and diamonds comes from. I see jewelry as a way to empower women. There is a material aspect of it, but in ancient times, precious metals and stones were valued for their energy and frequencies.

You recently started doing piercing parties. Where is the next one?

We are planning dates in LA, NYC and a tour around Australia! You can shop the party online if you can’t make an event – www.erthjewelry.com

You have had some of the most coveted A-listers and publications feature Erth. Is there one in specific that stands out?

It was really special to work with Jessica Alba on our recent 12 women campaign in support of Unicef USA. I really admire her as a down to earth mother and founder of the Honest Company, amongst acting and producing. What a force. At ERTH we love to feature women who inspire women, spread their stories and spread love.

Was there a special moment in time that felt like “you made it”?

I have never felt it as much as I do now. When I look at my children and my gorgeous husband, our home, my businesses, my team, I feel very, very grateful. I am living my dream.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Wake up at 6 to get the kids breakfast and get ready for school. Drive my truck an hour into the city, drop my son off at Montessori school and hit up my office to get work done! The I hit the gym, pick up my son up and either hang out with friends at a local Austin swimming hole, or drive back to our ranch and swim there. Make the kid’s dinner, bath, and do their bedtime routine. Then it’s time to pour some wine, cook my husband an epic meal, play music, chat, work on my book, and wind down for the eve. Sometimes we go on tour with him, sometimes I am out for modeling gigs, keeps it interesting.

If you weren’t in the jewelry industry, what would you be doing?

I am working on something, you will see soon…it’s pretty epic.

On style…

Describe your personal style in one sentence.

Relaxed, comfortable, timeless and chic! Model on the go!

Where do you find fashion inspiration?

Bianca Jagger, Jane Birkin. Full stop.

What is your Austin wardrobe must-have?

Hats! Really dope hats with a lot of character. I have yet to buy a pair of cowboy boots, I am waiting for the right pair, but that’s definitely a must-have.

Do you have a trick for elevating your look?

Jewelry, winged eyeliner, or a beret!

What is your go-to accessory?

A beret and a purse - if it’s not jewelry

Do you have any local Austin designers we need to know about?

Fort Lonesome

On travel and home…

You travel a lot for work, family and fun – what is one thing you cannot travel without?

My laptop

What are some of your favorite travel destinations?

Morocco, Maldives, Mexico

Any upcoming travel plans, or somewhere you’re dying to go?

We are going on tour with my husband to Hawaii and Japan. I have never been to Hawaii and have been absolutely dying to go there. And Japan is epic, the raddest place on earth.

You are from Australia, and now reside in Austin with your adorable family. What do you miss most about Australia?

Where we live in Texas is kind of like where I am from in Australia. We’re surrounded by nature, wineries, breweries - it’s really beautiful. I miss my family though, my nephews and nieces…hopefully they will come visit soon.

What are some of Austin’s best-kept secrets?

The restaurants OMG! And the natural swimming holes. I can’t tell where, or they wouldn’t be a secret, and the fun is in finding them.

Your ranch house is to die for! What were some of the deciding factors when choosing country living over city living?

Giving my kids the life I had within the outdoors with lots of space, nature…it’s a luxury. I even love the one-hour commute. We have been listening to podcasts and audio books. My son loved “Becoming” by Michelle Obama. Her voice is so calming. I’m glad we could enjoy it together.
