Talent comes naturally to illustrator and former lead designer at Michael Kors, Martha Napier. With a special penchant for watercolor, Napier creates whimsical illustrations that capture the joys and vibrancy of people in our lives. After finding success in her illustration business outside of work, this expecting mother took the leap and hasn’t looked back since. We took a moment to chat with Napier about her pregnancy style and how she plans on growing her personal brand, Marnani Design.
Describe your typical Sunday. Where are you, what are you wearing, and who are you with?
In our home, Sundays are all about rest, re-centering, and enjoying some peace and relaxation before the week ahead —sunny afternoon naps and gardening in our backyard. Now that it's finally warm in Chicago, we've been taking long walks to the lake. I'm wearing jeans, a loose top, tortoise shell sunglasses, and espadrilles. My husband Zack and I love to cook. We shop at the local Farmer's Market, so dinner is usually planned around our findings from that.
When and why did you first begin illustrating?
I've loved to paint since I can remember, but it wasn't until I moved to New York and went to Parsons that I found my love of illustration. After getting a post grad degree, I went on to work in the fashion industry for several years —my last post as lead designer at Michael Kors. Today, I work with clients of all shapes and sizes and am expanding to offer small housewares, apparel, and paper goods. With baby girl on the way, I think illustrating on onesies is definitely in my future.
Was pregnancy what you expected?
Running my own business while growing a tiny human has given me an appreciation for other women, other mothers, and my own mom that I couldn't understand before.
