Emma Henderson & Victoria Beattie
Clear summer skies are just around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited to get whisked away, be carefree and inspired by our bucket-list destination travels. This month, Emma Henderson and Victoria Beattie of The Beach People, take us to the land down under, where they share their best-kept secrets and celebrate our A La Plage summer capsule collection and our exclusive Roundie towel collaboration to accompany our seaside escapes and beyond…
Your morning routine always consists of…
Victoria - A cup of tea for myself and making breakfast for my boys, my husband Jesse, my son Theodore, and our dog, Duke. We usually go to Sunday morning service at our local church; it’s a lovely way to start the day.
Emma - one of my three children waking me up and asking for breakfast. My husband and I try to convince them to snuggle in bed with us for as long as we can and then enjoy a lazy breakfast and a drive to check the surf. We also go to church on Sundays; the kids love it!The kids are dying to go out and play at…
Victoria - Theodore is obsessed with Emma’s girls so it’s usually a trip to a local park or farm with coffee and treats to hang with the cousins.
Emma – The beach is our happy place, the kids run free, play in the sand and explore the rock pools. I take a big bowl of fruit and we are set for the day.
We will always find you wearing...
Victoria – A floaty dress, hair loose and barefoot…
Emma – Relaxed linens that are loose and slouchy. I also love a good pair of dungarees.
A day by the sea or cozy at home?
Victoria – Always by the sea. In the summertime, I’m there for a swim and in winter for a bonfire and a sneaky glass of red wine.
Emma – I find if we have had a big day, I pile the kids in the car and we all walk along the beach to sooth the soul. Even if it’s just for 20 minutes, it washes all of our worries away.
Victoria, your partnership with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation is so inspiring. Can you tell us more about it?
Victoria – Absolutely! We have partnered with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation to support their reef restoration and protection. Through projects like rehabilitating turtle habitats and removal of blue starfish (although pretty they are a pest), we are seeing the reef and its inhabitants restored and protected.
When it comes to the seaside life in Australia…
What the best part about living in New South Wales?
Victoria - The people are so beautiful, caring, kind, and considerate. The rich produce and the beaches are some of the best in the world. I often tease my friends in the cities with pictures of empty beaches and dolphins jumping on the horizon, ha!
Emma – We live in a coastal country town and everyone says hello as you walk by. So friendly. We are so close to Byron Bay, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with its white sands, warm waters, and crowd-free scenery.
Favorite place for a weekend get-away?
Victoria - Yamba please! Or a stay-cation at The Atlantic Byron Bay for a night is lovely too!
Emma – Definitely Byron Bay. Great food, shops, and the beaches are next level.
A go-to local beach spot?
Victoria – My husband and I love to go fishing or stand up paddle boarding at our local creek. We also enjoy meals at the Halcyon House at Cabarita beach.
Emma – We love Hastings Point. It has a beautiful creek running out to the sea and a big headland. If the season is right, we take a picnic dinner there and watch the whales swim by.Most important essentials for an ocean adventure?
Victoria – A Roundie (of course!), sunscreen, and some goggles to see underwater…and my cute little boy Theodore in his adorable swimmers covered in sand and giggling…that’s all I need.
Emma – Roundie! I love a big umbrella too so we can stay out all day.
On the success of The Beach People’s Roundie Towel and your collaboration with Joie…
What made you think of making towels that are round?
Emma: Victoria and I were sitting on the beach watching our husbands surf and I simply turned to Victoria and said “Don’t you think round towels could be cool?” After two years of hard work setting up the business, ensuring we had the perfect product with amazing quality, we launched in the summer of 2013.
What is the inspiration behind the brand’s artful and eye-catching geometric designs?
Victoria: Different things inspire Emma and me; I love observing nature, culture, and people and their stories.
Emma: I’m inspired by fashion, architecture, and design.
Using our A La Plage collection as the main theme behind our collaboration, what stood out to you the most?
Emma: We loved the Santorini feel of the mood board Joie sent through with the island’s bright whites and rich blue hues. It made us want to travel to Greece and jump into that beautiful Aegean Sea.
Take us behind the collaboration’s design process and how you incorporated your vision with that of Rachel’s to execute this design...
Emma: Rachel sent us a very inspired mood board of what Joie had in mind for a Roundie collaboration. The design team and I sat together and we mused through the images until we had a design that would suit both of our aesthetics. We love it and hope you all do too!
If you could take our Joie x TBP Roundie anywhere in the world...
Emma: The Greek Islands please…
From sisterhood to motherhood...
What is your relationship like as sisters working together?
Victoria: I love it! I get to work with my best friend every day. We are lucky to get along so well; we are polar opposites so we think that helps too. I was working in the office with the team today and Em rang to say that she was sitting with Daisy, her four-year-old, who was sick in hospital and was wondering if we could tag team so she could leave and feed her baby. I am now chatting from here with a sleeping Daisy, writing a speech, texting staff, and doing this interview. We just cover one another and make things work. As Mum’s, it’s a pretty sweet deal to work with each other. Our team teases us that together we are one super human. We’re better together!
Emma: There would be no TBP without Vic! She is a real go-getter, which is completely opposite to me; I’m a bit of a daydreamer. And being sisters I can read her like a book without her even having to open her mouth! It’s the best!
Between the two of you, who is more creative? Business-minded? Or equally both?
Victoria: Emma is definitely the more creative one; anything pretty that you see has come from her.
Emma: Victoria is amazing at branding/business side of things, that’s where she enjoys herself the most. I love watching her do her thing; she is so wise!
What has motherhood taught you so far?
Victoria: To be selfless and humble.
Emma: To take each day as it comes, no two days are the same and although I may not be a perfect mother, love always wins.
What is it like having kids in the same age range?
Victoria: It’s great as they play and Em and I can bounce ideas off one another. I’ll ring her and say the baby woke last night and she’ll give me a tip to try something new.
Emma: I love that we are raising our families together. If I’m having a tough day, I call Vic and say “can you feed all five of us tonight?” Ha! And the kids adore each other, which is beautiful to watch.
Best tips on balancing work life and family life? How do you enjoy the little things in life?
Victoria: Accepting that it’s never going to slow down and that the best time to rest and switch off is now, right in the middle of it all. I have no trouble leaving my phone at home and spending time with the family. When I am on holidays, I switch off…no emails etc. I think the best tip is to not be hard on yourself, do your best, and give yourself a high five for being a great mum!
Emma: Live the life you want to live now. I love spending time with my children at the end of the day. There is always something to be done with three small children but I put it all aside and at the end of the day, we walk along the beach or do some baking or just hang out.
Any exciting summer travel plans?
Victoria: I am heading to New Zealand for a family reunion (my husband is a Maori/Kiwi) for three weeks. We are hiring a campervan and heading round the south island and surfing up the east coast. Family fun times!
Emma: We are off to Bali next week for a family holiday. We can’t wait.
A secret you can share about the other sibling?
Victoria: Emma is so stylish! She is one of those people that always look good while I am covered in dirt and have chipped nails. She is always the lady, and the kindest, most thoughtful friend who is always baking treats for others and cooking meals for sick friends. Never too busy for anyone, she’s also addicted to shopping and dark chocolate…naughty girl.
Emma: Victoria is the craziest animal lover!! She follows dog Instagram’s and while we are in business meetings, she is looking under the desk at pictures of her dog Duke and smiling, it’s hilarious! Duke is like her other child, ha! Victoria has the best sense of humor. Last Halloween, she dressed up as a ghost and hid in the warehouse scaring all the staff as they arrived at work. She is the life of the party and never misses a good time!
