Introduction: Self-love, authenticity, and empowerment – a few of the many things that attracted us to Amira Khan’s lifestyle blog. With a uniquely modest style, in a not-so-modest world, Amira takes us around her hometown of Manchester and chats with us about her career, style, and all of the refreshing traits that make her ‘Modest Mira’.
On your career…
What inspired you to start blogging and sharing your life with the world?
I have always had an interest in fashion but never thought to share it on a wider scale for the world to see, until my friends kept insisting I open an Instagram account and create a blog to share outfit ideas and inspiration. I decided to go ahead and do it at a time that I was going through some hardship and really wanted to communicate how I was feeling to the digital world; whether that was through fashion, life choices and experiences, beauty, travel and good reads, you name it. It was one of the best decisions I made! I really should thank my friends for pushing me to attain my goals and passion.
What meaning does your handle @modestmira_ hold?
I get this question quite frequently and if I am completely honest, when I was thinking of names for my blog I needed something to rhyme and roll off the tongue with my nickname ‘Mira’. After so many misses, I liked the idea of ‘modest’. I am a modest dresser, but I didn’t intend for the ‘modest’ part of my name to just coincide with what I wear, but to also represent character and behaviour on an overall perspective.
How long have you been on the blogging journey?
I started my blog in October 2015 and it’s now coming up to my third year of blogging! Wow time does fly right?!
What has been the most surprising or exciting part thus far?
It’s so hard to pick one – I am forever grateful for every opportunity I have been given! The fact that I get to get up every morning and do what I love, work with amazing brands, attend their events, meet CEO’s of such renowned companies, and have the opportunity to showcase my creativity for these brands is as exciting as it can get.
If you weren’t blogging, what would you be doing?
I have a degree in a Psychology, a subject completely off the radar to what I do now, but I feel fashion would have always called to me so I would still be doing something in the fashion industry.
What are your hopes for your blog over time?
I would love to incorporate more travel, as well as Health & Well-being. On a wider scale, I would love to extend the platform to other writers to share their experiences and use it as their outlet too - hearing their thoughts and views on particular topics would be really nice.
How do you think digital has shaped fashion? What does this mean for you?
The digital world has changed fashion immensely - it has its positives and negatives, but overall it’s become easily accessible to find inspiration and ideas of what to wear while portraying so much diversity within fashion. I feel it has assisted with confidence in wearing whatever you want, enabling us to express ourselves freely and showcase our uniqueness through style.
On your style…
Describe your style in one sentence.
Feminine street style with a touch of quirkiness.
Your modest style is what makes you stand out from the rest. Do you find it difficult to stay true to your modesty in a world that is ever changing, and becoming increasingly more risqué?
I wouldn’t be human if I said I haven’t had the thoughts, but I always remind myself that this is part of who I am. I would never be able to go through with it and this is where I am most comfortable and free. I’ve always followed what was best for myself and what I am happy with. It can be quite easy to fall into the trap and follow how the world is evolving but I am very happy with my modest style and it represents me.
What does modesty mean to you?
It is the way you uphold yourself and your character. It’s not solely based on what you wear but your actions, behaviour and reasoning.
What is the significance of your signature headscarf? How does it enhance and/or shape your style?
My headscarf offers a sense of identity, it represents me and what I believe in. When wearing the scarf I feel as though it completes who I am, filling in the missing puzzle piece to my outfits and what I wear. It boosts my confidence in a way, enabling me to rock any outfit and put myself out there.
What is your fashion mantra?
Clothes don’t wear you, you wear the clothes- so own it.
How do you transition your look from summer to fall?
I tend to start off with light layering, throwing sweatshirts over dresses or skirts. I slowly incorporate thin outerwear and more denim into my wardrobe.
What styles are you most coveting for fall?
During fall I usually opt for more casual looks with a hint of boldness and quirkiness, only because the colder it gets, the cozier I want to be. I will be layering, what would fall be without epic layering?! I’m loving animal and check/grid prints, which will be sticking around throughout fall. The colour brown and its different shades will be something I’ll be dipping into and corduroy will be a hit on my list.
What is your favorite season to dress for and why?
I would have to say autumn/winter - I absolutely love layering! There are so many options you can work with, and get creative with. I am sucker for hoodies and sweatshirts- they are so cozy!
Who are your fashion idols?
I find fashion inspirations from so many fellow bloggers and influencers on social media, especially Instagram. My ultimate favourite is Marwa Atik (@marwaatik), she has such an effortless look! To name a few others: Rihanna, Aimee Song (@songofstyle), Yasmeena (@y.asmeena) and Selena Gomez.
You were born and raised in Manchester. If you were to live anywhere else in the world, where would it be?
My answer for this question always changes if I am totally honest! But right now I am thinking Canada or Australia!
If someone were visiting Manchester for only 24 hours, what would the perfect day look like?
Start the day off in a café situated in the Northern Quarter - preferably West Corner. Then have a stroll around there and peak into the vintage stores and edgy urban streets full of hidden art. Next tour Manchester’s museums and art galleries, which showcase Manchester’s historic background and art. Even go for a little activity and play Junkyard mini golf. Afterwards, make your way to Spinningfields to have an evening meal in Thaikun. Finish the day off with dessert or drinks (mocktails in my case!) at 20 Stories, with its aesthetically pleasing layout and amazing views of Manchester.
What are your favorite places for shopping in Manchester?
I mainly love shopping in the city centre in the Arndale and stores surrounding it, I also find myself shopping in the Trafford Centre quite often as well.
What are your three favorite vacation spots?
Portugal- Lisbon, Morocco-Marrakesh and Spain- Costa De Caprica
Where have you not yet been, but are you dying to go?
I have a list of places but my number one has got to be Japan- Tokyo!
Any upcoming trips planned?
Yes! I am booked to go to Dubai in October, which I am super excited about!
You were recently in Morocco – what are three words you would use to describe it?
Majestic, vibrant and historical
On health, mind and body…
On your blog, you have a section “Good Reads”. What types of books do you enjoy reading the most?
My favourite genre right now is self-improvement books and autobiographies. I love gaining knowledge on how to better myself and reading other people’s experiences in doing so too. Of course a good fantasy fiction novel would be top of the list too!
Do you have any favorite summer reads?
I haven’t recently had the time to get sucked into a new book but I have been rereading some previous ones. ‘The subtle art of not giving a f*ck by Mark Mason’ and ‘A thousands splendid suns by Khaled Hosseini’ are favourites.
How long have you been a vegan and what prompted you to start veganism?
I became a vegan in January after some heavy research. I found it was a decision that would help with my health and well-being. There are quite a few reasons as to why I made this decision - mostly my health and also the lack of trust with the meat and dairy industry. I couldn’t get over how animals were treated inhumanely for something we desire- I couldn’t be a part of that anymore. Over all it is one of THE best decisions I have ever made and wouldn’t ever go back!
Do you have a favorite vegan restaurant?
I haven’t managed to find a vegan restaurant which I can say is my regular as of yet. Though I do love ‘Mowgli’ (Indian) and ‘West Corner’ in Northern Quarter (they do the best vegan bean burgers)!
Any favorite recipes?
A chilli tomato, mushroom and spinach pasta. Massaman curry- flavoured with cinnamon and star Anise, cooked with potatoes, onion, tofu and cashew nuts. Lentil dahl curry
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received, or would give?
Only YOU can create the life you want. So pick yourself up, dust yourself off and kick ass once again.
