Get swept away as we explore Minnie’s stunning oceanfront refuge and get a taste for her laid-back Los Angeles lifestyle. Then jet-set across the country with us next week for a relaxing stay in the Hamptons as we take a trip to the beach with Laney and talk summer essentials. After all, this season is all about travel and lasting memories, so why not pack your bags with your favorite Joie dress and take a vacation with us?
Describe your typical Sunday.
Farmers market with my children, and surfing in Malibu with some other moms. We take turns watching the kids on the beach.
Your home has a stunning ocean view overlooking the Pacific Coast Highway. What do you enjoy most about living on the beach?
One of my favorite feelings in this life is waking up to the sounds of the ocean. Being so close to the water is a dream for me. I can hop down for a surf or a swim in no time.
You have an impressive collection of artwork. Is there an artist that speaks to your aesthetic the most?
I have a special relationship with all of the pieces we own. I love Los Angeles artist Tofer Chin. He deals in this fourth dimension that always blows my mind. And I adore Aurel Schmidt a New York-based artist, Dan Miller from Creative Growth out of San Francisco, and the insanely talented Ciao Fonseca. My husband and I have been collecting together over the years. We buy what excites us at the moment, so it winds up as a big crazy mix.
It seems more and more New Yorker’s are making the decision to move west. What was your experience like growing up in Manhattan and moving cross country to Los Angeles as an adult?
Growing up in New York was the best. I was exposed to different cultures, languages, arts, and styles and it remains my favorite city on the planet. Los Angeles has this unparalleled natural phenomenon. The mountain range, city, and ocean all intersect. I love both places and travel between the two constantly.
Your namesake collection and past collaborations with companies like Three Dots and Boast USA have been covetable, to say the least. What sparked your interest in fashion design?
Fashion for me is a fun and playful approach to self-expression. The way we dress can change one's mood and perception. I’ve always been drawn to that element of style.
You recently co-founded & personally curate a unique cosmetics experience through Vainité. Can you tell us more about the concept and what makes Vainité different from other companies out there?
Vainité is a curated flash sale site for luxury beauty. We are working with the best and most cutting edge brands in the business. It’s a great mix, very well edited and at the best price. All products are recommended by our favorite taste makers. I am so excited to share it with everyone when we launch this fall.
Now that summer is officially here, do you and your family have any vacation plans coming up?
Many, but I'm most excited about a road trip up north along the California coast and then inland. The highlight will be visiting my dear friend Nathan Turner while he is shooting his new cookbook which is basically a love letter to California.
Do you have any summer reading recommendations? Or a favorite “forever” book you suggest as a travel companion?
The Knockoff by the ever talented Lucy Sykes.
Surfing is also a favorite pastime of yours. Aside from Southern California, where do you connect most strongly with the water?
One of the fun parts of surfing is discovering new places to do it. I love South West France and Northern Spain. The food, the water, the people — HEAVENLY!
Your personal style is very laid-back and classic, which is the very essence of a Joie girl. What are some of your must-have items for summer?
Flowing dresses, wide brim hats, rompers... I am all about easy boho style.
