Jennifer Zeuner

In celebration of the launch of Jennifer Zeuner's delicate jewelry line in Joie stores, we've tapped the Southern-based designer as our March Sunday Girl. Since inception just ten years ago, Zeuner's minimalist collection —which includes a drool-worthy 18-karat yellow gold necklace adorned with a single diamond— has quickly become an A-list success spotted on everyone from Cameron Diaz to Taylor Swift. We sat down with Zeuner to talk typical Sundays, her secret formula for layering necklaces, and the unexpected muse that inspired her line.

Describe your typical Sunday.

Usually, we take it easy in the mornings and have a relaxing breakfast. If the kids have soccer, which they do now, I watch them play and then we try to make it to the beach. We typically end the day with a family dinner.

What got you started designing jewelry?

I made a necklace for myself inspired by one Kate Moss [wore]. I couldn't locate it, so I made a similar necklace for myself. While I was wearing this necklace, I stepped into a cool South Beach boutique, and the buyer bought it off my neck. Cameron Diaz bought the necklace, and my line was launched!

Your line’s aesthetic is understated, but each piece feels unique. Do you have a design motto?

My motto is 'follow your gut.' If the design feels right, I go with it and sometimes let it inspire other pieces. I like to design pieces that are practical and can be layered or worn on their own.

As a mother and business owner, how do you strike a balance between your work and home life?

I have four children, so it's about prioritizing and staying organized. My kids come first —if my son has a school play, I’ll make sure it's on the calendar, so I don't schedule a trunk show. I also have a great support system at work, and things tend to run smoothly without me.

You have a Sunday all to yourself, where are you going and what are you doing?

I would probably go running on the beach really early and then jump in the ocean all sweaty! It's the greatest feeling. Then I would catch up on my magazines at the beach. At noon, I'd check out the flea market, grab lunch at an outdoor cafe, go to the Perez Art Museum, and end the day with delicious sushi from Pubbelly in South Beach.

Cameron Diaz was amongst the first of many A-list celebrities to wear your pieces. How has your approach to designing changed since you first launched?

At first, my designs were heavily beaded and bohemian. The piece Cameron Diaz bought was simple, but most had vintage and unique beads. The line has evolved so much. It's now modern, simple and more sophisticated.

Because your products are so minimal and versatile, they make for great layering pieces. How do you style your jewelry with your everyday outfits?

I love layering a wire choker with any necklace, short or long. Some days I even layer three necklaces. It's all about the different lengths. It should never look too calculated.

You live in Florida, but travel a lot for work. Do you find yourself feeling more inspired in the quiet at home or while you are on the road?

The moment I get on a plane, I start drawing in my sketchbook. At home, I'm inspired at night when I'm lying in bed, or early in the morning when I go for a run. Of course, there are exceptions, but I get inspired when my mind is quiet and can wander.

Joie is opening a store in Coral Gables this summer. Which of your pieces are you most excited to see in the store?

I love the wishbone and bar necklaces. They pretty much go with anything.

What future ambitions do you have for yourself or your brand?

I would love to grow the brand internationally. I would also like to partner with a celebrity and collaborate on a small curated collection.
