This February, we’re celebrating the month of love with Andrea Swain, soon-to-be bride and event and floral designer behind Blooms by Drea. We catch up with Andrea at home as she effortlessly styles our bohemian and vintage-inspired pieces from our exclusive wedding capsule collection before jetting off to her own destination wedding in Cartagena, Colombia.
We can find you…
Cooking breakfast and relaxing with a big cup of coffee in our garden.
You’re most likely wearing?
Moroccan slippers, jeans, sunnies and a cozy sweater.
Go-to LA spot for brunching/lunching/or a morning latte…
I love going to this little French bistro in our neighborhood called Juliennes. If I am on the go, I grab a black coffee and a sweet treat from their market. On Saturdays, Brian and I love walking over and brunching al fresco in their beautiful outdoor garden patio.
Favorite way to pamper yourself is?
I love getting a good blowout! It is a great way for me to relax, read a magazine and let someone else do all the hard work!
Best way to end the weekend/prep for a busy week ahead?
I wind down with a glass of vino and my Sugar Paper weekly planner!
On your passion behind all things floral...
How did you first get into the industry?
Since I was a little girl, my mom always had me do the flowers for her parties, so I got a lot of practice! It was not until I chaired a masquerade ball in Los Angeles that I realized I wanted to shift from fashion design to event design and planning!
Most memorable event/project you designed for?
Some of my favorite events to design for are dinner parties! They are such intimate affairs, and you can often put more special details into the event. I have been able to work with many different brands each with their own distinct aesthetics, which challenged me as a designer and allowed me to really express my creativity.
The best place(s) in LA to find inspiration?
The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens in San Marino. I could get lost in their gardens for days! Art also inspires my aesthetic. Some of my favorite events that I have designed for have been at the Gagosian Gallery—whichever artist they are exhibiting and celebrating at that moment will usually inspire my work.
How hands-on were you with your wedding's florals/event design?
I sent all of my vendors a mood board, which helped them really understand my aesthetic and style. I then decided to let go, and let them be creative! The Robbins Otoya Event Planning and Design firm have been such a joy to collaborate with. Matthew Robbins is a creative genius, and Luis Otoya is a culinary master and planner. They have made the process so easy, and fun!
Your signature style could best be described as…
Effortless and feminine.
With your wedding just around the corner…
Did you always know you wanted a destination wedding?
Since I was a little girl I have always had my heart set on Cartagena.
I am Colombian! When I was young I lived in Bogota, but my favorite city was always Cartagena because of its rich history, vibrant colors and beauty.
You’re most excited for...
I am so excited to show our guests from around the world why Colombia is so special, and of course…dancing until dawn with our closest family and friends!
Bohemian bride or classic/traditional?
How did you and your fiancé Brian meet?
We first met on the beach in Santa Monica…after we swiped right! He proposed where we had our first date! On the beach, drinking margaritas, while enjoying the sunset.
On getaways and more…
Must-have essentials in your travel bag?
Passport, Clé De Peau concealer, charger, cashmere wrap, and an outfit just in case my luggage gets lost.
Souvenirs or photographs?
BOTH! We were just in Marrakech and brought back a ton of souvenirs to fill our home with memories from our adventure - something we love to do when we travel. I also always take a ton of photos!
Bucket list items with Brian?
Omakase in Japan, stargazing in the Blue Ridge mountains, and taking a dip in the Blue Lagoon in Iceland.
Any other exciting travel plans or projects in-store for 2017?
I am working on a Bahamian-themed event this spring with a group of wonderful women. I am so excited to help make their night under the stars come alive!
